This entry is part 5 of 13 in the series gmail tricks

gmail logoI am sure slew people are using gmail as there email client. I know lot of peoples shifted to gmail from other providers mainly due to its usability. Now I am going to explain how to make your gmail account as an application to store your notes online, however this is a tricky mechanism but I guess it is useful for employees who regularly use Notes.

There are mainly 3 step to make your gmail account a Notes Store.

Step 1)

Add a contact with name as “Notes” and an email address “yourusername+Notes@gmail.com”. Click on the “Contacts” link on the left side of your mail box, will load the contact window. Click on the first ‘+’ icon which has a menu tip of “New Contact”.

Step 2)

After entering the name as “Notes” and email address as “yourusername+Notes@gmail.com”, please click on the save button. It will add the new contact.

Step 3)

Create a Label “Notes”. Go to Settings->Labels enter the label “Notes” at the bottom and click create button.

Step 4)

Create a Filter. Go to Settings->Filters->Create a new filter (on the bottom). During filter creation add the “To:” field as “yourusername+Notes@gmail.com” and click on the button labeled “Next Step”. In the next window check the checkbox with label “(Archive it)” and “Apply the Label:”, from the drop down select “Notes” and click on the button with label “Create Filter”.

Now let me explain the denouement of this magic. You know gmail accepts email address with format “YourUsername+AnyLabel@gmail.com”. The ultimate thing is that your gmail will accept all email address with format as above. For eg: send any email as per above format from another email address and watch whether it receives your mail box.

How to take screen shot using snipping tool in Windows Vista?

Written on May 19, 2008 – 5:28 pm | by Sanil S
This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series Windows Vista Tools

Snipping tool is a cool software in Microsoft Vista for bloggers who are regularly taking screen shots to show software / tool demos in the blog, moreover it will have keen interest for bug reporters. Anyway I am regularly taking screen shots to show software demos in blogs.

The snipping tool can take different types of screen shots viz full screen, rectangular, any window or free form snips. In the free form snips you need to draw the shape with your pencil, it will be grabbed to the clipboard. Just search for “snipping” in the start menu’s search you will get the application. Here is the default interface.

As I mentioned that we can take different type of screen shots. All except Free-form are familiar I guess. So I am going to explain the operations to take a screen shot using Free-form snip. In the Free-form snip we need to highlight parts of the screen shot and draw on it with a free form pen of different colors, thickness and tip styles. Here is the screen shot that taken by using Free-form Snip.

I believe this is the best tool for taking screen shots.

If you are regularly bookmarking your favorite sites in social book marking sites then I guess Shareholic is the right tool to make the process more simple. Shareholic is a firefox browser extension that enable users to bookmark in social sites like digg, Del.icio.us etc and share it in facebook twitter etc.

One of the main drawback is the user need to sign in before submitting it with shareholic. This is more helpful for bloggers to share it to social bookmarks. We can also bookmark the page via right click.

Some wifi mesh products

Written on May 15, 2008 – 11:09 am | by kenneyjacob
This entry is part 2 of 6 in the series Wifi mesh network

The post series we are writing here is the resultant of wifi mesh network installations happening at Saidapet, Srinagar colony, Chennai. The mesh networks at Chennai is now up and running. We started load testing in the network and we will apply enhancements to the networks soon to boost signal strength and manage traffic.

The mesh products that I am planning to test out are

Meraki is a nice product and from my previous experiences with it, it has performed well. I myself have a meraki mesh running at my home. But their product is good only for the basic version. The version with more features are costly and their business plans are really sucks.

Meshcom provides firmwares for router manufacturers and operates in a different fashion compared to other mesh router companies. They are strong business wise and has got many tie ups in place. A few months back they had a windows mesh driver available on their site for free download. But now its not there. Now I am being asked to fill in a form. Anyways Ill look at it later.

Open-mesh is the Meraki killer
. It offers as many features as the Meraki with a lesser cost. If meraki is windows, open-mesh is linux. Meraki kind of cheated its fans. I was a hard core meraki fan. But now Im an open-mesh fan. The hosted interface for configuring open-mesh routers is really good and more and more features are being added daily.

Run DOS programs in Windows Vista? Install DOSBox

Written on May 13, 2008 – 4:41 pm | by Sanil S

widows vista logo Are you using Windows Vista and you are not able to run DOS based programs in your Microsoft Vista PC? I would suggest DOSBox is the solution for running DOS based programs.

What is DOSBox?

It is a DOS emulator and it works well with almost all platforms. The application already ported to Windows, Linux, MacOS X etc. Ultimately it works with Windows vista too. This application overcomes the ambit of running DOS based application in Windows vista, however the application does have some compatibility issues with Windows Vista. So I can’t guarantee that all DOS based programs works.

I hope somebody experiences problem for DOS based games in Windows vista. Just download and install the DOSBox and run the DOS based programs after that.

Alternate solution!!!

Another ultimate solution to resolve this is installing a Virtual PC in windows vista itself. After installing Virtual PC you can install any operating system in Windows Vista. Create a virtual partition and mount DOS operating system. DOS operating system is free for download from Microsoft.

Post Series Coming Soon - How to Create your own wifi mesh network?

Written on May 13, 2008 – 12:12 pm | by kenneyjacob
This entry is part 1 of 6 in the series Wifi mesh network

I Am a Techie is happy to announce a post series on Wifi Mesh Networking. In the coming weeks we will be testing some of the major mesh firmwares and supporting software’s.

Wifi mesh networks consists of a collection of wireless routers which work together to provide wireless access to client devices. The mesh routers route packets from one router to another in order to reach destination. One of the major factor that helps us classify the routers available is the algorithm used for routing. Here is a simple wifi mesh network diagram.

Mainly two firmware are popular for mesh networking, meraki, and open mesh of which open mesh is best suitable for the time being mainly because of its cost.

By making an area wifi enabled will make you even call within the network free of cost using VOIP.

Subscribe to the RSS feed and wait while we uncover the mesh secrets.
