Simplest Method To Enable Internet and Wifi Access in your car

Written on August 14, 2008 – 3:54 pm | by Sanil S
This entry is part 13 of 4 in the series WiFi Car

As I mentioned in my earlier post that we can enable our car WiFi by 2 means.

(i) Using Laptop as and enabler to internet connection.

(ii) Using Single board computer in place of Laptop as internet connection enabler.

The main advantage by using Laptop is we can even avoid router(Access Point) by configuring the machine to a point to point wifi access. The disadvantage is we need to carry laptop every time for internet connection.

The advantage of using SBC in place of laptop rule out the disadvantage of (i). We need to buy an SBC to make car wifi enabled which cost around $120.

I am mentioning simple and easiest method that is method (i) now. For this we need to configure our laptop for point to point wifi access. The main advantage of using method (i) is we can avoid access point(AP).

The figure above shows the architecture diagram of our simplest wifi car. The EVDO is connected to the first wireless laptop which will serves internet to other system(s) using point to point network. I will explain the step to step procedure now.

Click on the Network connection in control panel(Start menu->Control Panel->Network and Internet Connections->Network connections).

On the properties window click on the wireless network tab and Add a new connection.

Add a name for the network let it be “MyHomeNetwork” and make the authentication as shown in the figure above. You can add a password which can be used to secure your network. The main and ultimate thing is that you need to change your wireless network as adhoc(point to point) network by checking the check box shown in figure above. Click OK to save the settings. Yeah your system is ready to work as point to point wireless serving device and also a gateway for internet. Connect EVDO driver program to get internet connection.

Carry the system you configured now for getting internet connection in your car.

Your Peer system(s) can be connect to this network. Search for wireless network you can see a wireless network named “MyHomeNetwork”. Connect to the network with key assigned during the process.

My next post will describe the way to make your car wifi using Single board computer. Which is more promising WiFi car.

Point to Point WiFi access in Windows Vista

Written on August 12, 2008 – 12:31 pm | by Sanil S
This entry is part 4 of 4 in the series Windows Vista Tools

I am using Lenovo laptop with Windows Vista. The wifi access in this laptop is not much user friendly. It is not possible for a novice user to connect a wifi network without much hurdles. The lenovo laptops are packaged with a wireless management tool called Think Vandage. You can see the application when we start lenovo care application. The application is not at all user friendly. But my point of discussion is the process involved in connecting your lenovo system for point to point wifi access.

Where comes point to point wifi access?

This kind of wifi networking can be done with your system or laptop. The only requirement is your system / laptop does have wifi card. We don’t need a separate wifi router to serve content to other system(s). The connection is point to point, that is from one system to other system. You can even share internet connection to nearby device using point to point network.

The process involved in connecting to point to point network.

The first process involved is double click on the computer icon shown on your desktop toolbar.

On the new window which is “Access Connections” click on the Locations menu and select the menu item Create New Profile... New window will open which contain information needed to add new profile.

Enter a name of the location profile(which might be some dummy name like PtoP or Sythoos). Select the network connection type as Wireless LAN 802.11. Click on the next button. On the next window enter Network name (SSID), this is the name of the Point to Point network. Another way to find the SSID is to search network(Click on the Find network button). Select the connection type as Adhoc.

Click on the next button. The next window is the setting window. Click on the TCP/IP setting and add IP address of same class in the Point to Point network. If your network server is something like 192.168.0.1 then you can assign an address 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.255. Enter subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as the IP address of the system that serves internet / main system.

Check out the TCP/IP setting below. Don’t forget to add DNS Server as the system that serves internet.

I know the procedure is not much simple, although we can’t do anything rather than following the procedure. It’s Windows Vista we need to do a lot to configure even simple things.

Trip to Wagamon

Written on August 6, 2008 – 10:22 pm | by Sanil S
This entry is part 12 of 4 in the series WiFi Car

We are on the way to Wagamon. I am writing this post from our Car. You know how I am getting internet? Yes we are going in our Wifi enabled car with internet connection. All of us are using our laptops. We started 1 hour back we reached Kollam now. We need to meet one of the friend here.

Hope we will get the range for internet connection everywhere. As Wagamon hill station is a tourist destination I hope we can enjoy internet there. I had experienced some sort of internet connection issues, may be due to the tower switching. Anyway I am browsing the internet without much hurdle.

The trip

We have a presentation at peerumedu Engineering college tomorrow afternoon. We will leave to Wagmon after the presentation. Will stay at the hill station tomorrow night and will come back day after. Will update you the news from Wagamon. Oh the time is approaching 10PM its time for me to sleep.

Next day.

We had the seminar at MBC college and we started to Wagamon the place is really cool. But the main problem is no network connection for Airtel and Vodafone. So we were not able to call. BSNL connection was there but the signal strength was not good. We tried to connect to internet several times but we didn’t get the connection there. But we got some signal and we finally connected from the top of the hill. My friend is a travel blogger he will describe about the trip in his travel blog.

Yes the connection is here man.

The Ultimate Mobile Payment Solution :- mChek

Written on August 4, 2008 – 11:22 pm | by Sanil S

Technology has moved forward a lot. We are very much used with online payment solutions for wide variety of daily purpose which varies from online money transfer to e-commerce solutions. For instance now a days we are booking our air tickets, train tickets, movie tickets etc through online payment solution. Those with a few technology knowledge are used with all kind of online payment systems. By the advent of mobile phones which created another platform for payment, which are going to be more popular than online payment solutions,The mobile payment system.

Yes mchek has made it possible, the mobile payment system which enable online payment system into mobile, the mobile as an e-purse (electronic purse). The solution is currently live in India. mChek already identified their potential markets. The company is based in Bangalore. Company had already tied with banks like ICICI bank, city bank, corporation bank, HDFC etc. The application works with GSM currently the application is live with AIRTEL customers only but I guess soon this solution will be live with other providers too. They are selling their USP via AIRTEL which add more attention to providers. They had tied up with VISA and MasterCard for payment system. They are targeting both merchants and end users. mcheck is just an enabler they provide solution that make payment system mobile enabled. Currently they are backing payment via mobile for AIRTEL, transfer money via Airtel, ticket booking in Yatra etc.

How does application works?

To avail this facility you have to signup with mchek first(currently Airtel customers only). The registration is pretty simple just enter your mobile number and after that you will receive a USSD push from mchek. USSD push is a simple session oriented SMS push(similar to session oriented login in online). You will receive a j2me application on your mobile if your mobile is j2me enabled. Either you can use j2me application to add you mchek PIN or you can use online interface to add a PIN. The PIN is 6 digit numeric code which can be used later for transaction(s). This PIN should be kept secret don’t divulge this number to anyone. After adding PIN you need to register either your debit card or credit card for future transaction(s). You don’t need to carry your debit / credit card for money transfer afterwards. Suppose you need to pay your Airtel bill once you register your credit / debit card you pay bill from mobile itself. You can send query like “PAY BILL” to a particular number you will receive a USSD PUSH which will ask for mchek PIN and amount to transfer. If the PIN is correct the mchek will communicate with payment gateway and will process the payment. So simple as sending an SMS you can pay your monthly bills.
We can also power our existing payment solution to be mobile powered by registering mchek as a merchant. Now I am in house for developing one of our solution to be mchek enabled. They are providing libraries for platforms like php, java.

The solution is payment so be careful while developing solutions. A simple loophole may burn a lot.
