Google doc insert drawing option

Written on March 31, 2009 – 1:06 pm | by Sanil S

Google recently added insert inline drawing for google docs like office. The tool allow us to insert custom drawing in our docs / spreadsheet. This allow us to create custom drawings like Microsoft Office, but google docs still lacks professional software with Office.

Just click on the menu item called “Drawing” from the menu “Insert”. Draw your favorite image and add to your favorite document(s) and spreadsheet(s).

Open source social bookmarking tool, Semantic Scuttle

Written on March 20, 2009 – 1:41 pm | by Sanil S

Semantic Scuttle is an open source social bookmarking tool which is an enhanced version of Scuttle. The application is developed in PHP with database support to mysql, postgre, oracle and sqlite. The installation is very simple.

Installation

  1. Download Semantic Scuttle form Sourceforge.net, at the moment the latest version is 0.89
  2. Extract the Zip-File and upload the files to your web-server
  3. Import the file “tables.sql” to your database. With phpMyAdmin this is quite simpel.
  4. Rename the file “config.inc.php.example” to “config.inc.php” and open it with your favorite editor.  This file contains all basic information about your system

Settings in “config.inc.php”

Basic Settings

$sitename = ‘SemanticScuttle’;

Name of your site, will appear in the header.

$welcomeMessage = ‘Welcome to SemanticScuttle! More than a social
bookmarking tool.’;

Welcome-message, will displayed above your bookmarks.

$root = NULL;

Leave here “NULL” if your installation is not placed in a sub folder, otherwise you should write here the url to your installation e.g. “www.yoursite.xx/subfolder/”.

$locale = ‘en_GB’;

Here you can set the language of your installation.

$usecache = false;

The cache-system, for now we leave “false”.

$dir_cache = dirname(__FILE__) .’/cache/’;

Path to cache, leave the preset value.

$cleanurls = false;

This is for setting “nice urls”, for now leave it with the default “false”.

Database

$dbtype = ‘mysql4′;

Choose the type of your database, leave mysql4 for MySQL.

$dbhost = ‘127.0.0.1′;
$dbport = ‘3306′;

For over 99% of all installations the default settings are good.

$dbuser = ‘username’;
$dbpass = ‘password’;

Place here the username and password for your database.

$dbname = ’scuttle’;

The name of your database.

$tableprefix = ’sc_’;

Prefix of the tables in your database. If you imported the file “tables.sql” than leave the default.

User

$adminemail = ‘admin@example.org’;

This emails-address is used if a users has lost his password and is requesting a new one.

$admin_users = array(‘admin’);

Until now there is no user but here you should already put in your login-name. If there are more than one admin use:

array(’name1′, ‘name2′, ‘name3′);

$reservedusers = array(‘all’, ‘watchlist’);

Which words can not be used for usernames.

Antispam

For registration there is a simple antispam-question.

$antispamQuestion = ‘name of this application (no Caps)’;

The question, e.g. =’What is 2 plus 3′;

$antispamAnswer = ’semanticscuttle’;

The answer, e.g =’5′;

Remaining files are not important to us for the time being.

  1. Save the file “config.inc.php” and upload it to your webserver.
  2. Browse to your installation. If everything is OK you will see:

How to Stream Video of your conference or event(s) online using VLC Player?

Written on March 13, 2009 – 12:58 pm | by Sanil S

vlc-win32Video sites are getting lots of popularity these days. Today I am going to explain how to set up video streaming for a conference or any events. We can use open source application VLC player for this. The main advantage using VLC player is the application is open source, support most of the video formats, moreover the application works well with most of the operating systems which include Windows, Linux, Mac OSx etc.  Download VLC player for your operating system.

Now I will explain the steps to stream video online.

Requirements

1) VLC Player

2) Video Camera (to shoot conference and or event)

3) Camera connector to your server system. (May be some USB cable from camera to the system)

4) High speed Internet connection (If you want to stream through internet) with a good up link capacity.

5) If possible a static IP so that the IP can be used by clients

6) VLC player supporting operating system mentioned above.

Steps

1) After installing VLC player in your operating system (check all components while installing), open the application. Normally you can browse the application from the start menu with the path like this(Start Menu->All Programs(Program Files)->VideoLAN) if you are using windows.

2) Click on the file menu, select menu item called “Wizard”. Select the radio button that shows “Stream to Network” and click “Next” button.

3) On the next window you will be prompted with a window to select stream. You can either use a file to stream or if it is live conference select the camera input from the Window. You can select the camera input from the tab “DirectShow” or from disc or even from network. Click OK button and then “Next” button.

vlc-source-stream

4) Select HTTP radio and enter your static IP address in the “Destination” textfield and then select “Next” that will prompt you file format. Select the default format that may be either ASF if you are windows or MPEG or something if you are using some other operating system. Click next and fill in the TTL field as 1 and click “Finish” to complete the streaming server installation and configuration.

Client

Open a new instance of VLC player. Click on the file menu and select Open Network Stream’. On the dialog that shows up, select the ‘HTTP/HTTPS/..’ radio button on ‘Network’ tab and enter ‘IPAddress:8080′ in the edit box beside it . Click ‘OK’.

Embedding the video into a web page.

Create a simple HTML page and deploy it in some web server that can handle it online. On the HMTL page enter the HTML below.

<embed type="application/x-vlc-plugin"
         name="video1"
         autoplay="no" loop="yes" width="400" height="300"
         target="http://localhost:8080" />
<br />
  <a href="javascript:;" onclick='document.video1.play()'>Play video1</a>
  <a href="javascript:;" onclick='document.video1.pause()'>Pause video1</a>
  <a href="javascript:;" onclick='document.video1.stop()'>Stop video1</a>
  <a href="javascript:;" onclick='document.video1.fullscreen()'>Fullscreen</a>

The will also stream the same video through a web page.

Have fun reading. Don’t forget to subscirbe my RSS feed, you will be updated with latest trend bug fixes etc.

Lenovo Authorized Service Centers in India

Written on March 6, 2009 – 7:31 pm | by Sanil S

lenovoI had some bad experience about Lenovo service some days back. I have researched about Lenovo authorized service centers. I came to realized that main distributor of Lenovo laptops and desktops is Redington India Private Limited. Lenovo offers only one year warranty to laptops and desktops, on the other side popular brands like DELL, hp etc are providing extended warranties for 2 more years also. That of course depicts the poor quality of lenovo laptops and desktops compared to other laptops.

Here is the list of lenovo owned and authorized service centers in India. I have a serious advice if you are willing to invest INR 5,000 more you can go for Dell, hp laptops which are far far better than lenovo.

Firefox could not install this item because of a failure in Chrome Registration. Please contact the author about this problem

Written on March 2, 2009 – 8:43 pm | by Sanil S

Last day my Windows Vista got crashed, So I restored my laptop to factory setting. After the restoring my operating system I installed all my useful applications. Soon after the installation I opened firefox browser but then I got an error saying.

“Firefox could not install this item because of a failure in Chrome Registration. Please contact the author about this problem”

And the solution

Just run the firefox in Administrator mode.

How to run firefox in Administrator mode?

Just right click the firefox icon you can see a menu item called “Run as Administrator”. Just click the menu for a single time. You don’t need to worry that you have to do this each and every time. No there is no need once you run firefox in Administrator mode, the error will not pop up next time even if you run firefox from a normal user.
