How to search flickr photos by color ?

This might be interesting tip for all designers and all creative people. I just came to see this tool (Multicolr) which can help us to search flickr photos using color. This tool is a search by color tool for flickr. People behind multicolr is Tineye who are also behind reverse image search engine where in we can upload to TinEye and we can find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions etc.

How to use Multicolr ?

You can click on the palette shown at the top right. On clicking the color multicolr search engine looks for images matching the criteria. You can also select multiple color so that result will contain that particular color combo. The combination color can be deleted by clicking on the thrash icon shown with the color.

To recapitulate, this tool will be useful for all plebeians who are interested in art.

Windows Gmail Notifer Extension

gmail-notifier-plus-smallThere is a nice little application exclusively for Windows 7 which extends the functionality of Gtalk . The Gmail Notifier Extension adds additional features to the Gtalk notification environment.

1. The notifier allows us to see a preview of all the unread mails in the inbox. A button at the center allows access to the mail in the Gmail.

2. The jump list provides access to unread mail and clicking them will open them in Gmail.

3. Gmail secured RSS feed is used to retrieve mail and therefore it failry safe. Machine’s dependent encryption is used to save the credentials.

Transport Layer Security (TLS)

keyHave you ever thought of security in credit card transactions while you do online purchases ? You must be wondering when firefox prompt a security window before you navigate to payment page.

Yes this is because there is some security protocol initiation called Transport Layer protocol for everything which involves security in internet. I would like to give you a brief idea about TLS which is the successor of SSL ( secured socket layer). Both are basically cryptographic protocols used mainly for internet transctions which requires security. Applications that use TLS are VoIP related application, email, IM’s and e-commerce applications.

TLS authenticates end points and after that we can have secured communication link between the end points between client and server. After succesful signing of between the client browser and the server we can do safe transaction and the procotol preclude our transactions from message tampering, message forgery and eavesdropping.

Bit.ly overtakes TinyURL

Last year when twitter did not reach such mammoth proportions and shortening URL’s was not much in need TinyURL was the default URL shortener for Twitter. Then on July 14 2008 bit.ly was born and offered much more than what TinyURl offered and that included a very much shortened URL upto four characters and lot more anlaytics like how many clicked on the links and other statistics. Over the year more and more people began to use bit.ly over TinyURL and with Twitter real estate pegged at 140 words using bit.ly became inevitable and now bit.ly has become Twitter’s default URL shortener. the number of unique visitor’s are increasing at a rapid pace at the rate of 5000 in U.S.

Mozilla Lab Projects Bespin

Bespin an integral add-on that increases productivity and at the same time supports the open source community. The cope editor is based on HTML5 and is a true code editor which contains all the basic features that is required to write a code. The program features infinite amount of code lines and also provides syntax highlighting for major web languages like Javascript, CSS and HTML. The program also features a code bank which can come in handy. This application lets the entire code visible for other Bespin users so that they can collaborate or provide useful tips and informations regarding your code. Contribution to others using Bespin is also welcome.This application lows one to pull plugins from other people’s source codes. This feature allows one to combine two sites and draw from other people’s experience.The user interface is nothing but simple. Scroll bars both vertical and horizontal are available. this offers more flexibility and UI restrictions are removed.firefox-bespin

Advantages and Strengths of XMPP

Advantages:

The main advantages of XMPP is based on decentralization, its open standards, security and flexibility. As metioned one of the foremost advantages of using XMPP is that it is decentralized. this allows anyone to run their own XMPP server without the need of a central master server. This is very much similar to email. XMPP falls under open standards and it is formalized. Specifications have been published and the technology is not tied up with any single vendor which removes the need to pay any royalities. THe XMPP protocol has been used for a long time and companies like GOOGle has been supporting which ensures the development of libraries for clients, servers and other components. The servers running XMPP may be separated frfom public networks and it is secure as as security like SASLand TLS has been built into it. Channel encryption is supported by ensuring the availability of digital certificates. Another important feature that greatly enhances the desirabilty of XMPP is that it is flexible which implies customised functions can be built into it. This finds application in games, collaboration tools, file sharing and other features.

Disadvantages:

Large data overhead, limited  scope to scability and abscence of binary data are cited as the drawbacks of XMPP. Unmodified binary data cannot be delivered since XMPP is encoded as one long XML document.

However the advantages of XMPP greatly outweighs the drawbacks of XMPP.
