A hybrid mobile plan is all in the name. It’s basically something that lies somewhere between the two existing standard options that consumers are given with the current mobile market. There’s usually a contractual plan where consumers have to enter into a multi-year agreement with a specific provider, and then there’s prepaid plans where you can pay-as-you-go. You buy a specific number of minutes a month and after they’re used up, you can either decide to get more minutes, or not at all. Hybrid plans are a mix of both that have their advantages, as well as disadvantages.

One of the biggest advantages with a hybrid cell phone plan is that it allows you to get a quality cell phone through mobile provider, with all the minutes you want, but you don’t have to go through the credit check nor sign a lengthy contract. This is for people, traditionally, on a tigher budget or for those who want greater control over what they pay every month. It works like a prepaid plan in the respect that, once you use your minutes, that’s it and there are no additional fees. The rates are also, typically, much lower that prepaid options. You can also get reduced rates during the weekend or after a certain time of night. There’s also lower rates for mobile-to-mobile calls and it’s usually a much cheaper option.

It sounds great but hybrid plans do present a certain level of drawbacks that people might not like. For example, when people sign up with a provider under a contractual plan, you can usually get free phones and pick a lower priced package. With hybrid plans, you have to buy your phone outright, which can be really expensive. You’ll have fewer minutes, but for many who don’t use their phone that much, it’s sometimes worth it to get a contract. But people who usually fit into this category tend to prefer to get a pay-as-you-go, or prepaid, phone.

Hybrid plans have their plusses and minuses just like anything else. This might be a really good option for you if you’re on a tight budget and don’t want to spend a lot. Contact different cell phone providers and ask for a list of their options. They’re usually more than willing to work with you and pair you with a plan that works best for your specific needs.
