How to setup google docs for offline access?

Written on April 22, 2008 – 11:22 am | by Sanil S

Hurray….when I opened my google docs today morning I got offline functionality enabled for my account. I was looking for this, couple of days back. I got some information from a forum that only limited people got functionality available for the time being. Anyways I am happy that I got access for it now.

Let me explain the steps to enable offline access for your google document and spreadsheets.

Before going to this process if you haven’t install google gear install it.

Step 1)

Click on the link ‘offline’ on the top right of your google docs. You will get a pop up like below. Click on the check box and mark google doc as a trusted site.

Step 2)

Click on the enable offline access button. After clicking the button you will get another pop up

Step 3)

Create desktop shortcut for google doc. After allowing this it will start synchronization, that is a sluggish process. Don’t worry it will complete in some minutes.

After some time you will get a tick mark on the top right, that means your google doc is downloaded to your local machine. Disconnect your internet connection and go some place where you don’t have a internet access. Click on the google docs icon on your desktop.

Some basic tips.

The offline access is system dependent. If you need to access from different system you need to repeat the same process in all the system.
The offline access is browser dependent. You can’t share it with IE, mozilla, since data are saved in different folder.
The offline access is operating system dependent. You can’t share between operating system.

Now why should I care for desktop office? Google overcomes the main drawback with desktop office.

Anyways the google doc offline access does lack some more. I think for offline access, should be selective. What I meant was I can select file from the docs and only those file need offline access there by the syncing time can be drastically reduced.

    google docs

One of the best web 2.0 application now available online is google docs. A lot of Microsoft office users are now using google doc instead, for document preparation. The main attractive feature that distinguish it from office is the sharing mechanism. We can easily share the document, where as office doesn’t have such support since it is not online.

One of the main problem google doc faced was, it need internet connection even for editing the document. Since most of the google document users migrated from Microsoft office, they really want google docs to be offline. Yes google recognized the need. Now we can edit google document even while you are offline. Google uses google gear for this. I mentioned about google gears in one of my post.

With the help of google gear we can edit the document any time and whenever we go online it will be updated with the server. Watch out the youtube video and see how its works.

    Bookmark buttons in Mozilla

    Written on April 1, 2008 – 8:07 pm | by ansaf

    hotkey11.JPG

I dont know if people using Mozilla are aware of this feature. Placing bookmark buttons in the mozilla browser , other than the bookmarks option appearing in Menu item(’Bookmarks’).

In the picture above you can see some buttons/keys between the URL textbox and the browser Tabs. They are the bookmark visual interface keys.

    Advantages:

    • One click to your marked web pages.
    • You can even group multiple pages to a single folder with a common name. (eg: in the pic, ASP.Net is a folder in which the related pages are grouped).

    Dis-advantages:

    • Once the space is over (known as front row space), all bookmarks are not available in the front row.

    How to place bookmarks?

    hotkey3.JPG

    1. In the picture as you see, right click on the portion where you can place bookmarks, you can add new bookmarks manually.
    2. Drag and drop the tab to the bookmark portion.
    3. To enable the corresponding icon, simply click the bookmark button once placed. You get it.

Drag drop the button to tool bar. The new icon will open the gmail chat as a sidebar. If we close the sidebar we will automatically signed off. The gadget can open multiple tab for individual chat in the client, overall cool extension.
