Next generation Chips to be powered with DNA

Written on October 20, 2009 – 2:13 pm | by Jayakrishnan

imagesThe next generation chips from IBM is to be powered with DNA if sources are to be believed. “The cost involved in shrinking features to improve performance is a limiting factor in keeping pace with Moore’s Law and a concern across the semiconductor industry,” said Spike Narayan, manager, Science & Technology, IBM Research – Almaden.

“The combination of this directed self-assembly with today’s fabrication technology eventually could lead to substantial savings in the most expensive and challenging part of the chip-making process.” This would mean researchers could pack in more speed and computational powers into chips.

The challenge faced by the semiconductor industry is developing the necessary lithographic technology for features sizes smaller than 22nm. The ability of the DNA structures which can serve as scaffolds or miniature circuit boards they hope will help in developing the necessary technology to overcome the sub 22nm problem.  This allows the possibility to assemble components precisely on a much smaller scale.

Juice addon for Firefox

Written on October 5, 2009 – 11:40 am | by Jayakrishnan

imagesThe add-ons basket of Firefox is increasing day by day. While some are useful and oozes class certain other add-ons lack what it takes to be featured on blogs and in twitter conversations. Juice on the other hand deserves a lot of blog space tweets and fan pages.  Juice is an add-on that opens as a side bar once installed on Firefox.

Its cute and packs in a lot of punch. The add on features the ability to drag and drop images as well as videos, group them , sort them and download them all in one place. Well for all those Facebook addicts there is even a Facebook integration . Isn’t that juicy?. The better part of the add-on is a feature called magic . All one needs to do is drag and drop any text or image and the add-on will find relevant information associated with that particular piece of data .

This can be used for data mining.  The search option features Twitter, Google , Bing and Yahoo to mine for relevant information . Overall a great juicy add-on for bloggers, students and any information lover who would love to get more…..

Amazons new Protocol to Speed up Cloud Computing

Written on September 25, 2009 – 6:06 pm | by Jayakrishnan

Data intensive computing has been less costly nowadays due to cloud computing.  Cloud computing allowing users to buy resources online.  One major problem that plagued may users was the inability to upload large amount of data and this area has remained costly and time consuming.  Amazon announced a new file transfer protocol     which makes transferring copious amount of data a breeze and it does not requires heavy infrastructure.

One of the biggest bottle necks in cloud computing many say is the upload and download of data from the cloud.  The major bottleneck in this upload and transfer of data is the TCP a layer in the internet which is responsible for the transfer of data. TCP is fine for small amounts of data but when it comes to large amount of data it is very sluggish.

Transferring data across the United States making use of a  100-megabits-per-second (Mbps) Internet link making use of TCP can result in a latency of 100 milliseconds causing a  loss of 1 percent of packets, which translates to transfer rates at the rate of 10 Mbps and less.

Amazon Web Services makes use of technology developed by Aspera, based in Emeryville, CA and it is called the Fast And Secure Protocol (FASP).

“It  is an alternate bulk data moving protocol,” says Michelle Munson, Aspera’s CEO and cofounder. “The inefficiency [with TCP] is really very noticeable when transferring large amounts of data,” she says.
