Shaka, an Estonian startup has recently built a wind meter accessory for iOS. This is a battery free wind meter that can be plugged onto an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad’s headphone socket. It combines with the existing onboard sensors of Apple’s hardware and the startup’s own app to measure, record and display wind-specific weather data like current and average wind speed, maximum wind gust, ambient temperature, and wind direction. All these are mapped to a location through GPS. You can view the history on both your phone and web as well. You can share the measurements in social networking sites.

“Forecasts are often inaccurate and the coverage with stationary and connected stations is not good enough,” says Shaka co-founder, Raigo Raamat. “We wanted to simplify the process of sharing good wind conditions inside the community.”

The best part about this device is that it requires no battery and it easily fits into your pocket. It comes with Swiss-made impeller components.
Initially this device was meant to help people who take part in wind-related sports like windsurfing and kite-surfing to check the wind conditions.

But later on the co-founders discovered that it will benefit even more communities it will become a device that enables a smartphone or tablet to be transformed into a “connected weather station” for either private use or for contributing to and accessing real-time crowd sourced weather data.

They realized that it can be used in various fields like academia, agriculture, emergency services, golf Aviation, Hunting, Shooting Sports, motor sports etc. “The problem for all these use cases differ, but all need local weather measurements as input,” says Raamat.

Right now, the company is working on the hardware only — the accompanying app is free — but in the future it will offer additional paid-for services, along with opening up the platform to partners who want to develop apps on top of Shaka that concentrate on various weather-related communities.

If you are wondering how it works, all you need is to download the Shaka Wind Meter app and sign up for an account. Afterwards, you can plug the Shaka Wind Meter Device into the headphone jack. You will be able to measure and record the weather.

For using this device you need one of the following devices like

  •  iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5.iPad 2,
  • The new iPad, iPad mini.
  • iPod touch 3rd gen, iPod touch 4th genOS 5.0 or newer
  •  plus an Internet connection.

You can Pre-Order this device here The price of this interesting device is just $69.90. It will start shipping worldwide in June 2013.
