Each day while eyeing through newspapers or any media we are regularly updated with the news of accidents and the follow up stories. The road security in developing countries is shabby resulting to the large number of accidents. For the developed countries and cities the scenario is different. Huge amount of fuel, time and energy is wasted in the hours of traffic jams. As per the stats, road traffic accidents kill more than 120 lakh people and injured more than 50 Crore people worldwide every year. Everyday about 6600 deaths and 3300 serious injuries occur due to RTAs. The global annual cost due to RTA s is a whopping 2, 30,000 million US dollars. While working on solutions for this problem the main conclusion, supported unanimously by all were: “We could reduce the number of accidents and reduce the traffic congestion by giving timely information to the people”. Further discussions on the conclusion rooted a new network of vehicles called VANET’s (Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks). Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are forms of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) and like mobile networks it will help to inter connect the vehicles in a location creating a small network of vehicles. This network has various characteristics and it will allow you to communicate with other vehicles called Inter Vehicle Communication (IVC) and Vehicle Roadside Unit Communication (VRC). Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks and manetVANET is a simple network of vehicles and it allows the driver of a vehicle to sent messages to the vehicle nearby or in the network. VANET employs short range communication frequency hence, the inter connection of vehicles is limited to 500mts. Each 500 meters include a Road Side Unit. This Road Side Unit (RSU) will monitor the messages sent; display warning messages and other informative messages to all the vehicles in the network. The image includes an event of accident and it is communicated to the nearby vehicles and to the RSU. Now in the neighbouring network the RSU sent the messages to all the vehicles and they are taking a deviation so as to reduce traffic congestion. vehicular ad-hoc networks Road Side UnitThese RSUs will further monitor the nature of language, weather it is abusive or not. Since a network is not safe, the necessary security is established using the RSUs. While constructing a network of Vehicles, various steps were taken to make sure that the network is efficient and adoptable. Since Vehicles are mobile, and the operating environment is very different the VANETs should take into consideration about those aspects. Since there is a RSU in every 500 meters the vehicle during its free drives will always be connected to some network. One of the primary implementations of VANETs was successfully done recently by the police and fire rescue networks, yielding great results. Most of the modern vehicles are built with all these to support VANET. Still the adoption of VANET is never easy. Since it is built for safety and security purposes we should take necessary precautions to adopt VANET. The most important aspect for adoption of VANET is the low latency requirements for safety applications. VANET is build for safety purposes and any event of accidents, natural calamities and difficulties are sent to the nearby RSUs or the nearby vehicles. So the speed of transfer of messages should be fast. Since the number of networks available for the user is high, the VANET should be more interactive, entertaining and multimedia supported. It should offer more services to make the network attractive and adoptable. Since the Inter Vehicle Communication is not restricted anyone in the network could communicate with the other in the same network. This may lead to the abusive language communications which will reduce the quality of the network. Thus, VANET offers great advantages to vehicles of any size and dimensions. The changes implemented on vehicles to make it VANET friendly will shift the current scenario to an Internet enabled vehicles that will connect you anywhere you go. Since there is connectivity to internet this network will further lead to the question that weather the driver could type an email during his drive. This situation cannot be treated as a potential limitation of this super network. Suppose the traveler is in a traffic jam and with the on board unit, he could download the mail, and read it using the display unit. Thus he has turned the traffic jam into a productive one. Further with the VANET a person can browse Internet when he is waiting for a friend. The tracking with GPS and internet will be more effective compared to old networks. Thus, the applications of VANETs are unlimited and wide. The headaches of traffic control could be eliminated easily with the VANETs. Further, the current scenario asks for more innovations as the Google Driver less car should be compatible with the VANETs. In short, VANET have given a great relief to the authorities. This super network will work efficiently to eliminate the increasing number of accidents and safety issues.
